Entrepreneurship Myths You Need to Unlearn (Part 1)

If you were to do a Google search on how to become a successful entrepreneur, I guarantee you that you would find loads of people trying to convince you that they can show you how to make six figures in six months or even six figures in six weeks. The truth is, is that there’s a lot of hype in those promises and not a lot of reality. Want to make a million dollars? Well, I want you to know that in order to get to a million you gotta make make six figures first. But before six figures you gotta make five figures, and before you make five figures you gotta make four figures, AND sometimes before you make four figures you’re gonna have to learn how to make two or three figures. The point is, is that it’s not magic, you’ve gotta do the work.

So how do you become a successful entrepreneur?

Choosing Authenticity > Transparency (and how they’re different)

In your business do you find yourself being Authentic or Transparent? Here’s the thing, you have a responsibility to be yourself and to be able to be clear with your audience as to how they can kinda step into your world. It’s okay to agitate and make them a little uncomfortable but you don’t want to completely repel them. There are certain things, frankly, that you don’t need to tell your audience. Depending on your archetype, being overly transparent can be irresponsible. Now, if the personality of your brand is rebellious or what we call a provocateur then being completely transparent with all your drama might be okay, as long as you’re consistent all the way through. But, authenticity should always be your priority because people like real people. People want to see themselves in your story.

For the most part I believe that people go into transparency mode because they think, “Oh that’s the same as authenticity,” and it’s not.

Here’s the Best Way to Learn About Your Market

I feel like it’s really important to talk about models of both good and bad things that happen in my brand. And the same is true for your brand. Now when I say, “bad things” I don’t necessarily mean mistakes or failures. In fact, I want to challenge you to look at “bad things” as areas that can be improved instead. Nothing more, nothing less.

But in entrepreneurship, I have definitely learned more from people who have told me what not to do than from people who’ve told me what to do. I’m gonna repeat that:

I have learned more from people who have been willing to tell me what not to do than what to do.

10 Questions You Should Ask Before Getting Your Biz On (Part 2)

10 Questions You Should Ask Before Getting Your Biz On (Part 2)

Last week we started talking about some of the most crucial questions people fail to consider when executing their business. I have these questions written out and I’ve been using them for years. They are important to ask because they definite the difference between strategy and execution. See, execution should support whether or not your strategy is working.

If your execution doesn’t show that your strategy is working, then you need to go to another strategy.

Let’s jump into the content! I’ll be sharing my answers as a guide through this process.

Question #6: If your parents were no longer here, what would you do?
That’s kind of a harsh question. For me it’s a little tender as I lost my dad 6 months ago. Like I said, I’ve been using these 10 questions for years, and I still come back to them, even when it hits close to home. So if your parents were no longer here, or they were no longer watching you (for good or bad), what would you do?

10 Questions You Should Ask Before Getting Your Biz On (Pt 1)

Today we’re talking about 5 of the 10 questions you should ask yourself before getting your biz on. What I mean by that is, when you’re trying to figure it all out, or trying to get into motion, here are 10 questions to consider (I’ll be covering 5 today, and 5 next week.)

These are questions that I ask myself and I “rinse and repeat” them all the time. Not to just validate what I’m doing, but to come up with new ideas that I can go ahead and implement.

If you take the time to write out these questions and journal the heck out of it, you’ll be able to pull out nuggets that will really help you position your brand. In fact, I’ll be answering these questions right along with you, so you can pull an actionable example straight from it.

Let’s jump in.

Question #1: What are you freakishly good at?

How to Turn Your Stuff into a “Forever-Brand’

How to Turn Your Stuff into a “Forever-Brand’

I am a devotee and snob about strategy, yes this is true.  It’s because I know that businesses that have solid strategies are building scalable Forever-Brands, and will bring the world value now and still be around next year and the year after…(even if you end up looking different in a few years, that’s good – strategy requires you to evolve).

Before I get into more detail here, a heads up:  if you’re not in your business for the long haul, then this blog post isn’t for you.

If you are, then fabulous.  Keep reading.
